Why Women Business Owners Avoid Brand Photoshoots (and how to finally feel comfortable)

You know you need new photos.
Your website still features that cropped wedding guest picture from 2019, your LinkedIn headshot looks like you’ve just been released from corporate captivity and your Instagram grid is now 72% Canva graphics because you’d rather post quotes than your own face.
But every time you think about booking a brand photoshoot, your brain immediately offers up the following helpful thoughts:
“I need to lose weight first.”
“I always look awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I hate having my picture taken.”
“I’ll do it when I feel more confident.”
As a brand photographer for women in business, let me tell you something important - almost every woman who steps in front of my camera says some version of this.
Even the confident ones.
Especially the confident ones.
The Myth That Confidence Comes First
Somewhere along the line, women were taught that visibility is a reward for becoming perfectly polished, as though one day a magical fairy godmother appears with flawless hair, unlimited confidence, a capsule wardrobe, and the ability to suddenly enjoy candid laughing photos.
Sadly, this has not happened to any of us. Confidence rarely comes before the thing that scares you.
It usually comes after.
After the photoshoot.
After posting the picture.
After realising the world didn’t collapse because people saw your face online.
Why Visibility Feels So Personal
For women in business, showing up online can feel surprisingly vulnerable because you’re not just selling a faceless product or service anymore. You’re suddenly fronting the business as your face becomes part of your marketing, your personality becomes part of your brand and suddenly posting on Instagram feels emotionally similar to standing up in assembly at school.
No wonder so many women hide behind logos, graphics, stock photos, product-only images, “coming soon” posts and endless educational carousels.
Meanwhile, your audience is desperately trying to figure out who you are, whether they trust you and what working with you feels like. People buy from people, especially now as your customers are trying to figure out whether that video they’ve reshared is deepfake AI.
What Actually Happens During a Brand Photoshoot
Most women imagine a brand shoot involves aggressive posing, awkward fake laughing, wondering what to do with their hands, and me shouting “YES GIRL” every seven seconds like a deranged cheerleader.
I can assure you it’s absolutely not!
A good brand photoshoot should feel more like spending time with someone who understands how uncomfortable visibility can feel. My job is not to turn you into an influencer. My job is to help you look like yourself on your best, most relaxed day.
That means guiding you naturally, helping with poses, planning locations and outfits, giving you things to do with your hands, talking constantly so you stop overthinking and capturing moments that actually feel like you- no modelling experience required.
Honestly.
The Confidence Shift Nobody Talks About
One of my Visibility Social clients once said:
“I came for photos but left with confidence and connections.”
And honestly? That sums it up perfectly. Because the real transformation isn’t just the images.
It’s seeing yourself professionally, realising you do belong in your business, recognising the woman your audience already sees and finally feeling visible instead of hidden.
You Don’t Need to Become Someone Else
You do not need to be louder, more polished, thinner, trendier, younger, or more extroverted.
You just need photos that help people connect with the human behind the business.
That’s it.
Your audience is not looking for perfection.
They’re looking for reassurance.
Warmth.
Energy.
Trust.
And none of those things require you to become a completely different person.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been waiting until you feel “ready” to book a brand photoshoot, consider this your sign that ready might not arrive first - if ever.
Sometimes confidence is built by doing the thing before you fully believe you can.
And usually?
The women who tell me they’re awkward in photos end up messaging me afterwards saying:
“That was actually really fun.”
Which is still one of my favourite plot twists.
FAQs
What should I wear to a brand photoshoot?
Choose outfits that feel like you, but slightly elevated. Solid colours, layers and texture photograph beautifully. If in doubt, consult a style coach like my good friend and podcast co-host Michelle, aka Mrs Stylewright
What if I hate being photographed?
Most of my clients say this before their session. Guidance, conversation and movement make a huge difference. I’ve got your back.
Do I need to know how to pose?
Absolutely not. That’s my job.
How often should I update brand photos?
Ideally every 3–6 months if you regularly market online.
