A little about me

Hello, I’m Nicola, I’m a 40-something Lincolnshire girl with a huge family, and I love to tell people’s stories. I live in Grantham with my husband of 20yrs, our two teenage boys and our three demanding Shih Tzus.

Being a committed introvert, I’m thoroughly at home behind the camera rather than in front of it. This is how an acceptable hiding place became a hobby, the hobby turned into a passion, and my passion became my dream job.

I’ve taken photographs for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I went to a family gathering and started talking to a fellow guest with a DSLR camera that a lightbulb switched on in me. I was fascinated by his professional looking kit and convinced him to let me have a go. I can still remember the mesmerising sound of the shutter as it swished away inside the camera. The rest, as they say, is history.

I borrowed my mum’s Nikon D3300 and selection of lenses the very next week and I was lost in this new hobby. I never did give it back. There’s barely a single holiday photo taken since with me in it, but we do have the most spectacular memories to look back on!

Several years ago, I had the crazy thought that I’d like to turn my hobby into a business one day, and every decision I’ve made since then has been influenced by this in some way. I constantly harangued my long-suffering friends to let me practice on them, I’d turn up at their parties with my camera, and rearrange their living rooms to take the cutest photos of their newborns on my ‘visits’. But it wasn’t until I photographed a friend’s wedding that I realised my soul was happy - this was what I was going to give up the secure job I’d been in since I was 17 years old for. It was an exhilarating, life-affirming, yet terrifying decision.

So I invested in real training to be the best I could be. I sought out photography mentors whose work I loved to teach me their magic, I spent endless hours in courses covering the technical aspects of photography, professional editing, and the running of a self-propelled business, and I upgraded from my mum’s borrowed Nikon to the full professional kit I have today. When you work with me, you’re getting the result of thousands of pounds (and hours!) of investment in myself, my kit and my mindset. You also get someone with life experience, the patience of a parent and the organisational skills of a project manager! I have an unwavering need to deliver excellence, but I love to have fun while I do it too!

QUICK-FIRE FACTS

1

“I’ve been with my husband since I was 13yrs old, we’ve been married for 20yrs.

I haven’t worked out what the secret is yet.”

Things people may not know about me:

7.     I have honed the skill of biscuit dunking and know how               many seconds to dunk every type without them breaking

off in my tea. This is a valuable life skill, I can teach you it.

8.    I have a full motorbike license and a Kawasaki ZX600, but

am too chicken to ride it. I can no longer fit in my leathers

but am not committed enough to misery to diet into

        them.

9.    My husband has a helicopter pilot’s licence, but I’ve never        been in a helicopter with him or anyone else.

10.  I don’t like camping. At all. Not one bit.
